What It Means and What to Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You are brushing your teeth as usual and notice a little blood in the sink. It does not hurt, so it is tempting to ignore it. Many people assume they simply brushed too hard.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>bleeding gums are not normal<\/strong>. Even a small amount of blood is your body&#8217;s way of telling you that your gums are inflamed. Caught early, the cause is usually easy to fix. Ignored, it can slowly turn into gum disease that damages the bone around your teeth.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do gums bleed when you brush?<\/h2>\n<p>In most cases the cause is <strong>plaque<\/strong>, the soft layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. When plaque is not cleaned away properly, especially along the gum line and between the teeth, the bacteria irritate the gum tissue. The gums become inflamed, swollen and fragile, and they bleed when touched by a brush or floss.<\/p>\n<p>This early stage is called <strong>gingivitis<\/strong>.
