Clear Aligners and Invisalign: How to Clean and Care for Them

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign and similar systems, have changed orthodontic treatment. They are nearly invisible, removable and comfortable, which makes them a popular choice for adults and teenagers who want straighter teeth without metal braces. But clear aligners only work as well as they are worn and cared for.

Whether you have just started treatment or are thinking about it, these habits keep your aligners clear, your mouth healthy and your treatment on schedule.

How clear aligners work

Clear aligners are custom-made trays of thin, medical-grade plastic. Each set moves your teeth a small, planned amount. You typically change to the next set every one to two weeks, as your dentist directs.

Two things matter most:

  • Wear time. Aligners need to be worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day, taken out only to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and clean your teeth. Less wear means slower or off-track treatment.
  • Hygiene. Aligners cover your teeth most of the day. Anything left on your teeth or trays stays pressed against the enamel, so cleanliness matters even more than usual.

Daily cleaning routine for your aligners

Clean them morning and night

Brush your aligners gently with a soft toothbrush (a separate one from the brush you use on your teeth) and cool or lukewarm water. A little clear, unscented liquid soap or a cleaning product made for aligners helps.

Avoid:

  • Toothpaste on the aligners. Most toothpastes are mildly abrasive and scratch the plastic, making it cloudy.
  • Hard brushes
  • Hot water, which can warp the plastic so it no longer fits

Rinse every time you take them out

Rinse aligners under cool water whenever you remove them so saliva and plaque do not dry onto the surface.

Soak them regularly

A few times a week, soak your aligners in a cleaning solution made for aligners or retainers, following the instructions on the pack. Then brush gently and rinse well before putting them back in.

Eating and drinking with aligners

  • Take aligners out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Food can damage them, and tea, coffee, colas and turmeric-rich curries stain the plastic.
  • Sugary or acidic drinks trapped under aligners bathe the teeth in sugar and acid, raising the risk of cavities.
  • After eating, brush your teeth (or at least rinse well if you cannot brush), then put clean aligners back in.
  • Keep meals and snacks to set times, so aligners stay in for longer and your teeth get a break from sugar.

Store them safely

Whenever your aligners are out, keep them in their case. Wrapping them in a tissue is the most common way they get thrown away by mistake. Keep them away from pets, hot cars and direct sunlight.

Look after your teeth and gums during treatment

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day.
  • Carry a travel toothbrush and small toothpaste for meals out.
  • Keep up regular check-ups and cleanings. Teeth that move need healthy gums; see why healthy gums matter.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Soaking aligners in mouthwash, especially coloured or alcohol-based ones, which can stain or cloud the plastic
  • Using coloured or scented soaps
  • Exposing aligners to hot water or heat
  • Using bleach or harsh chemicals
  • Moving to the next set early, or wearing aligners less than prescribed

Keep your check-up appointments

Regular reviews let your dentist check that teeth are moving as planned, that the aligners fit properly, and that small issues are corrected early. At the end of treatment, wearing your retainers as advised is what keeps your teeth in their new position.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a day should I wear clear aligners?

Usually 20 to 22 hours a day. Your dentist will tell you exactly how long to wear each set.

Can I drink water with aligners in?

Yes. Plain water is fine. Remove them for everything else.

Can I clean aligners with toothpaste?

It is better not to. Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch the plastic. Use a soft brush with cool water and a little clear soap or an aligner cleaner.

Are clear aligners better than braces?

Neither is better for everyone. Aligners are discreet and removable; fixed braces can suit more complex tooth movements and do not depend on wear time. Your dentist will recommend what suits your teeth.
